How to Reconnect With Your Horse or Pet After Hurricane Helene

Here in western North Carolina, we’re going into the second week of clean-up post-Hurricane Helene. Many people are feeling fatigued chainsawing roads clear, fueling generators to keep their freezers going, and repairing washed-out driveways. And then there are all the animals and pets, from horses, dogs and cats to injured wildlife that need taking care of. Clean-up fatigue is setting in.

Scene of the damage as seen through the window of my pickup. I took this photo as I was delivering a load of hay to Black Mountain, North Carolina.

Some people take a few hours off to try and rebalance – if not restore – a sliver of their former sanity. Others forge ahead, knowing that, at some point, they need some time off. If you’re one of those who’ve been affected by Helene – either directly or indirectly – and feel like you’re hitting a wall, I wish you all the best in finding that bit of peace that’ll let you forge ahead.

Do You Need a Break?

If you’re taking care of animals, my wife Julia Carpenter is giving a talk at REIN Rescue that might interest you. Here talk is on Thursday, October 10 at 10 am in Rutherfordton, North Carolina.

Julia will teach you how to deepen your connection with horses and other animals you may be taking care of. This is a timely topic because lots of folks impacted by Hurricane Helene are stressed. This tension spreads not only to the human members of our family but also to the animals we’re taking care of.

Here’s an example. Julia works with a stable of well-adjusted horses. The owner’s a level-thinking person who really tunes in with her horses. It shows. All the horses in this stable, as well as the boarders and a cheerful pig, are well-adjusted and the barn has a chill feel about it.

And then Hurricane Helene happened. The owner suffered damage on her property and was dragged into an unscheduled clean-up repairing smashed fences and removing toppled trees. She also lost power to her home and her barn, as did her boarders. Like many others in the area, after she stabilized her situation, she went to work helping others get back on their feet. While all this was happening, helicopters and planes were flying over her farm, day and night, ferrying supplies to the areas affected by Hurricane Helene.

Needless to say, this stressed her and her horses out. Her horses, usually chill and relaxed, were on edge. They can’t help but reflect the chaos and the mental state of those that take care of them.

This is where Julia’s program can help. It is about how we can lower our thinking levels to the benefit of those around us, from spouses and spotted ponies to spitzes. This program can help you even if you don’t have animals.

Julia will start her talk with a brief explanation of how you can deepen your connection with your animal/animals/others around you in this stressful time. After her presentation, Julia will give demos with some of the wonderful horses that REIN Rescue is working with. If you’re in the area, we’d love for you to join us. The weather should be beautiful so bring a chair and enjoy the program.

The address is:

She has a simple two step technique to show you how you can achieve the same peace with your horses, cats and dogs – and quite possibly your spouse or those around you, too!
