Long Distance Barefoot Travel on The Humble Hoof Podcast
How far can a horse or mule walk in hoof boots? This week, I was a guest on Alicia Harlov’s podcast The Humble Hoof. The episode is called “Riding Mules Cross Country”. We discussed what it’s like to travel long distances (thousands of miles) with hoof boots on a horse or mule. Just click on this link.
As you may know, I don’t shoe our mules or horses with steel shoes. When their feet need extra protection, like when my wife Julia and I ride them on rocky trails, I fit them with hoof boots. The rest of the time, I let them go barefoot.
I’ve now traveled over 10,000 miles with my mules barefoot and in hoof boots, and I enjoyed sharing this knowledge with Alicia. Some of the things we discussed are:
- the difference between a horse and a mule’s foot
- boot tipping for mules
- the minimalist approach to hoof booting
About the Humble Hoof Podcast
Alicia describes the Humble Hoof podcast as the “podcast for both horse owners and equine professionals, offering discussions into various philosophies on the health of the hoof and soundness of your horse. Each episode we will explore either a topic in regards to the hoof, such as laminitis or navicular, or focus on an interview with a professional in the hoofcare world- whether it’s a farrier, trimmer, vet, bodyworker, etc.”

I’d love to give you a free copy of my just-released 134-page photo book “19 Million Mule Steps”. The book is about my 7 month, 2,300 mile Long Ride from North Carolina to Idaho with my mules Brick and Cracker. Of course I did the journey in hoof boots! “19 Million Mule Steps” has photos of the hoof boots I used and what the mule’s feet looked like during their journey.
More Hoof Booting Info
A while back, I wrote the Hoof Boot Report . It’s about three types of boots my wife Julia and I used on a month and a half long saddle trip we took from our farm in North Carolina to Virginia and back. It’s the most comprehensive review of Cavallo, Renegade and EasyBoot hoof boots on the internet.
