LiL Eagleman: Loving a Leucstic Chipping Sparrow

Could you grow to love a leucistic sparrow? This week my wife Julia wrote about LiL Eagleman, a rare, white-headed sparrow she’s fallen for. You can read the whole story right here on her ConsideringAnimals.com blog.

Lil Eagleman under our chestnut tree. He’s a rare (think 1 in 30,000) leucistic chipping sparrow. Plenty more about him and the speed of love on ConsideringAnimals.com.

How do you Pony Your Pony?

Let’s say you’re out riding your mule or horse and leading another next to you. What do you do with the end of the lead rope attached to the animal you’re leading? Do you Bunny Ear it, Under the Leg it or do the Loose Around the Horn thing? Or maybe something else?

Ride one, lead one: here I’m riding my wife Julia’s Haflinger Pickle and ponying my mule Polly. Polly’s carrying a tractor tire. I had a flat on… Continue reading

Full Mule Moon

Last night’s super flower blood moon was accompanied by an eclipse in some parts of the world. We didn’t get the eclipse but caught the beautiful sight from between two pairs of mules’ ears. Just on dark my wife Julia and I rode our mules Brick and Cracker to the top of the mountain behind our cabin. Here are some photos I though you might enjoy.

Waiting for the moon. Here, Brick is tied to a chestnut oak tree at… Continue reading

Julia rode her pony Pie. I rode my mule Cracker. From the clearing high above the cabin, we just looked out over the Brushy Mountains to our South. We listened to the “chimp pang” call… Continue reading

Wagon Riding in the Sandhills of North Carolina

How many different ways can you combine horses, mules, donkeys, wagons and carts? Last weekend, I attended the wedding of my friends Kenny and Myla Tyndal in the Sandhills of North Carolina. Talk about a whole lotta pine trees, crazy knots and ways to fix a wagon with a beer can.

The wedding wagon train. Those are Kenny’s mules Thelma (L) and Louise (R). Somehow I ended up driving his wagon while he and his new wife Myla and the… Continue reading

Springing Toward Summer

Saddles on our porch: I rode the one on the left from Atlantic to Pacific oceans and the one on the right from here in western North Carolina to Idaho

Happy Easter Sunday to you. The leaves are darkening up, the mules are getting shiny and Snookie is panting in the dirt under the back porch. My wife Julia just posted a beautiful essay on spring moving ahead toward summer here up the Shoebox Canyon. Read the full story, with… Continue reading
