Photo of the Day - Black Bear at the Dump

I didn't expect to find a black bear at the dump, but there it was, last Saturday, looking over things while I was dumping a load. A bald eagle flew overhead at the same time, making me realize that, for some great wildlife spotting, it's hard to beat the Caldwell County Landfill. What do you see at your dump?

  • Bernie,

I could write a book about the people & things I’ve seen and found at the recycling centers I’ve worked at. I call them dumps because I’m not boujee. I’ve got a garage full of antiques and collectibles people have thrown out. A 7ft porcelain Esso sign, books from the 1840’s, 100 plus year old mason jars, 20,000 Japanese yen, Beatles vinyl albums, wooden RC Cola crates and the list goes on. It comes in everyday. It’s kinda sad to see how we just throw out anything and everything these days. I hope y’all are doing alright in the high country.

    • Great to hear from you, Eddie. I’d buy that book! I love your list of found/discarded items. You’re right, we throw out waaaay to much as a nation. Just last week I rivetted the head of our spatula back to the handle because I couldn’t bear the thought of throwing it out.
I hope you guys are doing great. Be sure to drop by next time you’re in the area!
      Big howdy from holler.

      Bernie
