The week I set off with my mules Brick and Cracker to ride from North Carolina to Idaho to see my brother-in-law, Nick, I bought a new pair of lightweight pants. To save weight, I purchased the lightest pair I could find. By Nebraska, 1,000 miles into my journey, the holes in the seat of my super-lightweight pants were so large I had to patch them with duct tape sewn on with dental floss.
