Small Craft Warning: How I Repaired the Tiller I Broke Sailing in 25 Knots

The morning my tiller broke, I woke to a small craft warning on board my Nimble 24 sailboat Grit and decided to go sailing anyway.

Morning coffee and a chart book aboard the sailboat Grit
Calm start: how mornings start aboard Grit – with a cup of coffee and a glance at the chart book. I enjoy using a combination of paper charts and electronics for my navigation.

I hoisted her tanbark sails, tied in a double reef, poked her nose into the Pamlico Sound and the second I rounded… Continue reading →

How Not to Pack a Canvas Tent: A Shackleford Banks Lesson

This week I found myself in a similar predicament to the time my wife Julia said we should carry our kayaks on the deck of Grit, our Nimble 24 sailboat. I said no, we’d be fine towing them. That turned into a debacle.

My advice to Julia this time involved how to pack up the wall tent we’d pitched on Shackleford Banks. In this video I will instruct you… Continue reading →

As promised last week in my get-the-boat-ready-to-float list, here’s a hand-drawn (as opposed to AI-drawn) map of where Julia and I are heading for our mid-March trip. We’re sailing to Shackleford Banks with our sailboat Grit to observe the wild horses that live there.

Solo circumnavigator Bernie Harberts' Nimble 24 yawl Grit at the town dock in Oriental, North Carolina
My Nimble 24 Grit at the Oriental town dock not far from where she almost tangled with an expensive motor boat when I fouled the propeller in the kayak I was towing.

Vince recently wrote me the following:

Good morning. I was wondering how you feel about having the outboard in the cockpit well. It seems like it would be noisy and difficult to remove it for service and cleaning.
Thanks for your time.

Back Under Sail After 22 Years: Why the Nimble 24 Sailboat Is the Perfect Shallow-Draft Cruiser

Sailing again: my Nimble 24 Grit sailing upwind with the tiller lashed (Click on the image to watch the video)

Grit‘s tanbark sails glowed in the setting sun as we sailed up Broad Creek. We ghosted into a cove under full sail and I lowered the anchor into the tea-colored water. A ripple wriggled away from the hull and disappeared into the calm waters. After 22 years without a sailboat, I was back afloat.
