Renegade Hoof Boot Repair Day on the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail
Mules Brick and Cracker are taking two days off from our mule ramble at Nancy and Bill Sluy’s CCC ranch. The mules have enjoyed lots of grain, deep grass and two well-earned rest days. While I was here, I had a chance to go over my Renegade hoof boots with new friends Hanna and Lisa.

Virginia Highlands Horse Trail Mule Ramble Update: Cripple Creek
Howdy. Mules Brick, Cracker and I wanted to give you a quick update about our pack trip up the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail. We’ve been on the road nine days now and have traveled about 70 miles. Cell phone reception has been pretty much nonexistent, but I finally got some coverage in Cripple Creek.

I thought you’d enjoy these photos from the last few days. The Virginia Highlands Horse Trail… Continue reading
Adjusting Pie’s Hoof Boots: Part 3 of a 3-Part Series
How do you adjust a pair of new hoof boots?

In today’s post, I’ll show you how I’m adjusting a pair of hoof boots to fit my wife’s pony Pie. To get you up to speed, here are the first two parts in this three part series.

Trenton, MO Greetings
I steered the mules in to Trenton, Missouri to pick up a a canvas water bucket at the post office. Thanks, Julia, for supporting your husband in his rambles! Brick, Cracker and I arrived last night (Thursday). Right now we’re camped at veterinarian Dr Dale Alumbaugh’s clinic Affordable Veterinary Care.

The Stay Put Mule Rain Blues
I rode in to La Plata, Missouri, ahead of the storm. The plan was to buy sardines and ramen and then ride out the other side toward Idaho. But the rumblng clouds shattered and poured down on me in pieces. It’s rained over an inch and I’ve eaten most of the sardines and some of the ramen and the damn wet stuff keeps falling. And I’m still in La Plata.

After the First 1000 Miles on a Mule
Despite the grinding pace, Brick and Cracker are holding up really well.
Their feet are holding up nicley. They’re traveling barefoot – no steel shoes. To minimize hoof wear, they wear Renegade hoof boots. These are working well, with the only issues being the usual wear and occasional broken cable. In all the miles, I’ve only lost one boot. That was yesterday and I have a mind to walk back up the highway and retrieve it.

In to the Tar Road Land
The road to Hell may be paved with good intentions but the road to Trenton, Missouri is paved with tar. Black, sticky, melt-in-the-noon-day black stuff that sticks to the bottom of the mules’ hoof boots and pulls up like creosote taffy.

The List of Items I’d Take on a Half Year Mule Ramble
What’s the list of items you’d take with you if you wanted to take a six-month long mule ramble?
Hell if I know. But Julia stepped in to the rescue. She hand wrote a list based on the items used on our last month and a half mule trip.

Here’s what Julia’s… Continue reading
