Talking Trash with Trent Loos on “Rural Route”
I, Bernie Harberts, did not use generative AI to write or illustrate this article. Spell check and grammar check, yes. AI, no.
About 2 weeks ago, the mules and I stayed with friend, sixth generation Nebraska rancher and broadcaster Trent Loos.

One morning, over coffee, we sat down at the microphone and talked about the things I noticed on my mule journey that most folks overlooked. In particular, trash – road side trash.

If you’re curious about Indiana’s bananas and the Busch Light cans in the bushes, click on the audio player below.
This segment originally was broadcast on Trent’s “Rural Route” radio program on July 26, 2019.
An earlier conversation we had – covering the 1,200 miles from my house to his – broadcast July 25. You can catch that by playing the audio player below.

I just want to say I am a fan of all your shows. I try not to miss any of them! I live 180 southwest of the horse racing track you went to in Fargo,ND. I’m a teacher and live in Ashley,ND. But I’ve taught all over ND and Arizona. I lived 8 years as a kid in the Rodebud Reservation while my dad worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and mom at the hospital in the sixties. Thanks for all your shows!
Hi, Marilyn,
So good to hear from you! Pardon the delay in getting back to you. I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed the latest show. That’s so cool you lived on the Rosebud Reservation. I spent a week there with a lady named Janice Red Willow on my way from Canada to Mexico with my mule Polly. What an amazing insight you had into that place at that time. Have a great week and I look forward to bringing you more shows! Bernie PS: I’ll be sure to give you a heads-up when my new travel website and podcast Travel Grit comes out!
