Exciting news. “Swan Song: The Legacy of Lake Mattamuskeet” premiers this Thursday, July 3 at 8 pm on PBS NC. The episode is one hour long and will be the season finale of PBS NC’s award winning documentary series My Home, NC.
Swan Song will introduce you to the incredible story of Lake Mattamuskeet, North Carolina’s largest natural fresh water lake, the legend of the Lake Mattamuskeet apple, and a fascinating collection of Hyde County residents. It also includes breathtaking footage and audio of thousands of giant tundra swans, honking snow geese and just what it’s like to get snowed in with a mule and a traditional covered wagon.
This was one of the most memorable mule rambles I’ve taken. Mule Polly ran over me with my own covered wagon before filming started. During the trip, we got snowed in, dealt with icy conditions in the low twenties and witnessed Lake Mattamuskeet in its frozen finest. Then, because of the prolonged freezing temperatures we endured, I dealt with frost nip on my toes for two month after the trip.
I’m thrilled that the PBS film crew captured the gritty nature of this ramble and that director Morgan Potts crafted it into one of the most authentic wagon ramble documentaries I’ve ever witnessed.
The PBS NC film crew included director Morgan Potts, Brooks Bennett, Emily Frachtling, Sadie Maddock and Mike Milstead.
Shooting Swan Song was a reunion of sorts for Polly, me and PBS NC. A few years ago, PBS NC director Morgan Potts and his crew joined Polly and me for a five-day ramble through Pamlico County, visiting coastal fishermen, net makers and farmers. That episode, Mule Rider, won Morgan an Emmy Award and went on to become one of PBS NC most popular episodes.
